Oscar P. Austin was a United States Marine who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Vietnam War. He was born on August 15, 1948, in Nacogdoches, Texas and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1967. Austin was serving as a private first class in 1969 when he and his unit came under heavy enemy fire. He single-handedly charged an enemy emplacement, killing several enemy soldiers and saving the lives of his fellow Marines. Austin was killed in action during the battle and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1971. In his honor, a guided missile destroyer, USS Oscar Austin (DDG-79), was named after him and commissioned in 2000.
